{short description of image}

Eduard Becker was issued German patent 70879 in March 1893 for this corkscrew called the "Columbus". An English patent was issued in September followed by an American patent in April, 1894. These examples from Argentina are marked INDUSTRIA ARGENTINA, GAUMEN, M. REG. on the front of the frame and PATENTE NO. 165169 on the back. The split frame facilitates removal of the extracted cork from the worm.
